Master Module

Financial Accounting

The module Financial Accounting is a key element of the accounting education of master students of the Area Accounting and Taxation at the University of Cologne. The module is fully conducted and administrated by the Professorship of Empirical Accounting (Prof. Dr. Michael Stich). Students of the following study programs are warmly welcome to participate this module:

  • Students of the Master of Science in Business Administration - Accounting and Taxation (Schwerpunktmodul),
  • students of the Master of Science in International Management - International Management (Ergänzungsbereich), and
  • incoming students. of programs with admission by the incoming student office.

The module deals with a comprehensive set of issues in the field of corporate reporting which likewise includes advanced reporting challenges (e.g., international reporting on derivatives and hedges) and insights into the most important global trends in corporate reporting (e.g., integrated reporting). The module Financial Accounting consists of the following three courses that focus on three particularly important facets of corporate reporting plus an introductory precourse which recapitulates several important questions in the fields of accounting, corporate governance, finance, and current megatrends such as digital transformation and corporate sustainability):

  • Refreshment Course
  • Part I: International Accounting
  • Part II: Accounting Analysis
  • Part III: Integrated Reporting

In one combined final written exam (100% of the total grade), Cologne students have to work through assignments related to two out of three courses. Thus, in the summer term 2019, all Cologne students have to pass a final written exam which includes assignments with a weight of 50% related to the course Accounting Analysis (Part II) and assignments with a weight of 50% related to the course Integrated Reporting (Part III). As far as the study program regulation allows this choice, incoming students can select to write either the exam on Accounting Analysis (Part II), or the exam on Integrated Reporting (Part III), or on both (Part II and III).

In the summer semester 2019, the Refreshment Course takes place in the first two weeks of the second term. Details are already available to the participants of the module. Please note that visiting this course is voluntary for all participants of the module Financial Accounting, however strongly recommended. The Refreshment Course deals with the following issues (undergraduate level):

  • Chapter 1        Corporate governance
  • Chapter 2        Corporate sustainability
  • Chapter 3        Digital transformation
  • Chapter 4        Firm valuation
  • Chapter 5        Statistic-based decision making
  • Chapter 6        Financial accounting
  • Chapter 7        Investing and financial markets

Further details on the course are provided in KLIPS. Please do not hesitate to directly contact Prof. Dr. Michael Stich for any questions around the organization of this module in the summer semester 2019 as soon as possible.
